Philippians 3:8 Amplified Bible

Yes, furthermore, I count everything as loss compared to the possession of the priceless privilege (the overwhelming preciousness, the surpassing worth, and supreme advantage) of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord and of progressively becoming more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him [of perceiving and recognizing and understanding Him more fully and clearly].
In English, we have one basic verb, "to know," that covers both "to have knowledge about" and "to know by experience."  The Greek verb in Philippians 3:8 (and 3:10) is a word that means "to know by experience." I love reading and re-reading this passage in the Amplified translation because it attempts to expand our word, "to know," into the fullness of the Greek word.

Isaiah 66:1-2 (NASB)

66 Thus says the Lord,

Where then is a house you could build for Me?

2 “For My hand made all these things,

Thus all these things came into being,” declares the Lord.

“But to this one I will look,

To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word.

Lamentations 3:22-24 (NASB)

22 The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,
For His compassions never fail.
23 They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“Therefore I have hope in Him.”
