The Things of the Spirit

1 Corinthians 2:14 (NASB)
But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.
1 Corinthians 2:14 (Amplified Bible)
But the natural, nonspiritual man does not accept or welcome or admit into his heart the gifts and teachings and revelations of the Spirit of God, for they are folly (meaningless nonsense) to him; and he is incapable of knowing them [of progressively recognizing,  understanding, and becoming better acquainted with them] because they are spiritually discerned and estimated and appreciated.

"[T]he gifts and teaching and revelations of the Spirit of God" are not separate from the person of the Holy Spirit, but part of Who He is and His occupying presence in my life.
Therefore, since the "things of the Spirit" are not separate from Him, the presence of the Holy Spirit must be cultivated  over time: "progressively... becoming better acquainted" with Him.
